Viberti (Vivi)

Viberti (Vivi)

Viberti, also known by the "Vivi" brand, is a historic Italian industrial company founded in Turin in the early decades of the twentieth century, initially specializing in the construction of bodies for buses, trolleybuses, and special vehicles. Founded by Giovanni Viberti in 1922, the company quickly stood out for its quality craftsmanship and focus on innovation, quickly becoming one of Italy's leading coachbuilders. In the 1930s and 1940s, Viberti produced buses and coaches for major public transport companies, introducing advanced technical solutions such as lighter and more streamlined load-bearing structures, which allowed for greater capacity and passenger comfort. During the Second World War, the business was partially reconverted for wartime needs, but after the war, the company returned to focusing on civilian transport, making a significant contribution to Italy's collective motorization. In the 1950s and 1960s, Viberti consolidated its position in the transport vehicle sector, becoming a benchmark not only for buses but also for trailers and semi-trailers for freight transport. During this period, iconic city and intercity bus models were introduced, recognizable by their modern and functional lines, and destined for circulation in many Italian cities. Over time, the company further diversified its production, establishing itself as a leading manufacturer of trailers and semi-trailers for commercial and industrial use, capable of meeting the needs of road transport, an increasingly strategic aspect of the national economy. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Viberti brand reached its peak, both in Italy and abroad, establishing itself for the robustness and reliability of its products, the fruit of a meticulous construction tradition but also a capacity for innovation with new equipment technologies and lighter materials. With globalization and increased international competition, the company faced increasingly complex challenges, leading to industrial restructuring and reorganization. Despite the challenges, the Viberti brand maintained its identity and its connection to Turin's tradition, continuing to produce commercial vehicles, semi-trailers, and specialty buses. Over time, the "Vivi" name was associated with certain production and sales lines, with the aim of making the brand more recognizable internationally. Today, the Viberti name remains linked to the long legacy of Italian coachbuilding and its contribution to the development of public and private transport, a symbol of an era in which Turin's engineering industry successfully combined elegance, functionality, and industrial solidity. Although it no longer holds the market weight it had in the postwar decades, the Viberti story continues to represent an important part of the Italian automotive industry, remembered both by vintage bus enthusiasts and those working in the commercial vehicle sector, where the quality and pioneering vision of the Turin-based company have left a profound mark that is still recognized today as an integral part of the national manufacturing tradition.
