This Mercedes-Benz from the W115 series is striking because of its light blue color scheme, but also because of its remarkable body shape: it is a Universal, also known as a Kombi or Station Wagon. “But Mercedes-Benz didn't build Universals in the W114/W115 series, did they?” we hear you think. That's exactly right, but Mercedes-Benz did sell them. The “Strich-Acht” models, also called the W114/W115 series because of their introduction in 1968, were the first Mercedes-Benz models to reach sales of no less than 2 million units. That was more than all produced post-war Mercedes-Benz models together.
This caused capacity problems. Because of these capacity problems, Mercedes-Benz did not build Universals itself: the factory supplied a CKD kit to various body builders, such as Crayford, IMA Universal, Santos and Movauto, who fitted the W114/W115 with a Kombi body on a small scale. In addition to the CKD listing in the chassis number, these cars also got a code in the chassis number that this chassis was intended for a car with a special body variant. Only a very small number were built by the body builder Movauto from Setúbal, Portugal. The station wagon at Classic Park is such a rare Movauto. This car is equipped with a 220D diesel engine with 60 hp (contrary to the nameplate on the special trunk lid) and a manual gearbox. The car starts and drives fine, but this is of course a project car that, after the necessary attention, will be a very popular guest on tours, meetings and events. This rare appearance has no registration documents.
